Particularly interested to know about class sizes, the accommodation they offer and of course the salary for a teacher with 10 years+ (incl. IB) experience. |

Hopefully someone will show up, but just to warn you, I have never encountered anyone on this board who has taught at the Sultan School.
When I first got to Oman in the late 80's, this was THE school for the rich and influential Omanis - and it definitely turned out the cream of the crop that showed up at SQU. I doubt if that is as true now as there are many more decent schools. I don't recall meeting any of their teachers through the years, but since I had no children, I fear I didn't pay much attention.
Have you applied? You may need to wait until they make an offer and then be able to compare it to what others on this board have received at other K-12 schools in the country.

I suggest that there are no replies regarding Sultan's School because there are no disgruntled teachers! I went for an interview there a few weeks back and the campus was stunning. Accommodation also looked excellent. As they were only interested in offering me a local contract I didn't push my candidature. |

Ah... the dreaded 'local hire' contract...
I suspect that you are correct about the reason that we have heard little on the board. The other reason is because this is a board for EFL teachers and in the Gulf most of us are teaching university level. They likely have very few EFL teachers there - in relative terms... Most of the teachers in K-12 teach various subjects and only show up here if they accidentally encounter this board.
Gyaro... Do you know any of their teachers? Are their students all Omani or is it mixed nationalities?

I was informed that I could return to Europe and apply for Sultan's School from there. In that way I could qualify for 'overseas' hire.
I believe that the Sultan's School accepts only Omani children.
I don't personally know any of the teachers there but have met friends of people who have worked there and their reports were glowing. In any case anything would be better than where I currently work (no comment). |

Thanks gyaro and VS for your helpful comments. AS VS says, I'm not an ESL teacher ... in fact I teach IB maths.
Hopefully my interview will go OK ...
Thanks again ... Crumpy |

Good Luck... do let us know how it goes (by PM if you prefer...). I would be curious about the teaching experience there.

I am American and also a teacher living here in Oman with my Omani husband. My daughter will be starting at the Sultan school next year. I did attend the school and I have met some of the teachers and I found all the teachers very informed and happy. The students are mostly Omani but they do have a few kids from other mid. East countries as well as places like Turkey. A few students like my daughter are only half Omani. The education system there is great. I also tried to get a teaching position there but I would be considered a local hire.........(which sucks) so I thought I wait on that one. I hear the teachers do get paid nice but on the other hand..........I hear they work for it as well. they live on campus and have to put in alot of after hour work. the staff is very friendly. just call then and they would be more then willing to give you a tour. this is what I did when looking for the job and fell in love with it so much I will put my daughter in it next year. Again........most kids there understand arabic but i do know that if a child wanted to attend that school and was not arabic they would allow him or her. just you would need to have arabic as a second language......and learn it a bit.
anyway...........great school. |
