Anybody know which generally pay better? Are there any advantages of one over the other? I have worked part time on both and it is much a muchness, but I was wondering if that applies to the full time posts. Anybody care to share their experience?

I worked at a national university full time from 2000-2004. Very good salary and accomodation/housing package. Research grant of about 300,000 yen a year. National universities have now been privatised and many are now trimming the fat, cutting salary and laying off teachers. Salaries depend on age, experience and qualifications at most public universities with pay linked to how long you have been teaching.

There are three main types of public university - national, prefectural and municipal. I am now in my fifth year working at a municipal one. Packages vary according to what type of status you have, ie full time but limited term or sennin, which is tenure or tenure track. Often sennin get help with accommodation costs and limited term teachers don't.

As far as I know, national universities are now cutting pay and positions. I haven't worked full time at national universities but I know people who have and they have told me as much. The ones I know of also pay quite badly for their part-time staff.

In terms of salary, private universities can be better or worse than public ones. However, in terms of research allowance, public universities are invariably better. Sorry I can't be of more help.
