What's the strangest question one of your students has ever asked? Something that's just left you so dumbfounded you really don't know how to react? I've got a tie, but both questions are from the same girl.

Do you have four seasons in the US?

Do you have seafood in America?

My novice 1st grade students:

"Mr. Kevin?"

"Yes?"

"What's your name?"

(and then they laugh!)

One of my first graders asked me, " What do you put in your eyes to make them that color?" I have light blue eyes, not seen much here.

The other day one of my kindergarten students asked me if I was the mother of the little girl next to her. Shocked Shocked Shocked The kid didn't even look remotely foreign. Kinda out of the blue.

"What are you from?"

"Do you have McDonald's in the U.S.?"
"Do you have KFC?"
"I think the U.S. doesn't have mosquitos, right?"
"Do you have rice in the U.S.?"
"Do people drive cars in the U.S.?"

Sometimes I screw with them: "No, we don't have anything in the U.S. People are still on horseback hunting with bows and arrows. Once when I was a child I saw a T.V."

Of course, I love the "Why are you..." questions. How are we supposed to respond? "Why are you so fat, tall, white, etc..."

Just today I got asked, not by the students but by the monitoring teacher, if the United States uses Arabic numerals like China does.

I had to bite my tongue to stop from telling her that no, in fact, we're still on the Roman system, and creditting China for being way ahead of us on this one.
