I'm currently planning to trek around Japan on the following route:
Nagoya --> Kyoto
Kyoto --> Osaka
Osaka --> Tokyo
Tokyo --> Nagoya
Is there any way of purchasing cheap shinkansen tickets? Does anyway know the rough prices to do these by shinkansen? Any replies are helpful |

go to JR.
You can buy tickets, and save some money.
If you buy 6 tickets at a time you can save a little more.
It is called business Kaisuu ken.
In English I think it would be commuting tickets.
If you want one at a time, go to discount ticket stores.

Nagoya --> Kyoto 5,000 yen
Kyoto --> Osaka 30 minutes about 600 yen by JR. 2,500? by Shinkansen.
Osaka --> Tokyo about 12,000 yen.
Tokyo --> Nagoya 7-8,000 yen
You can buy discount Shinkansen tickets (non-reserved) at ticket shops in Osaka, maybe up to 10-15% off ticket prices. |

BTW Osaka to Tokyo goes through Nagoya
Nagoya to Tokyo price will depend on the service one stops at all the stops on the way (cheapest) the other only at a couple (more expensive)
Depending on where you are in Gifu ken It might be just as easy and cheaper to go straight to Kyoto, rather than going into Nagoya and then going on. |
