This sounds strange but although I have lived in Japan a few years I am unsure of unemployment insurance matters. The fact is - I never paid it and my old school where I worked for a couple of years never mentioned the topic.
I paid my own health insurance (which probably I should not have as a usual working week was 40 hours - 32 classes with preparation time and other school tasks taking the hours to 40 plus) but at no time was unemployment insurance mentioned to me. I was not unhappy at that school but needed to do different things.
Could anybody tell me if it is likely that unemployment insurance was deducted from my pay and if so, does the owner have to give me any kind of refund? |

A common practice among many language schools if you have a full time contract is to only count your actual teaching hours, not the hours you work in the office as your actual hours. For example NOVA teachers work 35-40 hours a week, actually teach less than 27 hours a week, and are tus classified as part time. By law, employers do not have to deduct unemployment insurance health insurance on part time workers. You are working there full time, but you are considered a casual teacher. This saves them a whole lot of money as some time they have to pay up to 50% of the monthly premium.
If he has not taken it out of your wages you can not claim a refund, and if he has it should be stated on your payslip as a deduction (shitsugyohoken-teatte, in Japanese) I would best check what your official status is and whether he has taken it out of your paycheck. If all else fails , you can check at the Labour standards office, and they will investigate on your behalf, becuase BY LAW, he is required to pay into it on FULL-TIME employees. |

This "beep" should read S-H-I-T-S-U-G-Y-O-H-O-K-E-N (Japanese for unemployment benefit) |
