At the moment there is limited wireless connection in a few places Beyoglu Besiktas, Profilo, etc. However, I heard today that the plan is that Istanbul will be totally wireless by the end of the first quarter 2007.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Buildings all over the city will soon be sporting new antenas, but on the other hand everybody will be have internet in their classroom |

| what does a wireless city mean? Portland was going wireless when I was there last year, but it is a small city in the "silicon forest". Do you have to sign up to get access to wireless in some places? I saw that in a Starbucks in the US. I'm a techno klutz, so I am wondering... |

The wireless city has several different conformations. Philadelphia is going wireless and I believe it's free, but the wireless network will be open to lots of ISPs other than Earthlink which gets paid by the city to provide internet access, and these ISPs may charge for "enhanced" services. Several other cities have gone wireless or are getting there. Some cost is often involved for the user, but it's generally a lot less than paying a monthly ISP fee. There've been complaints about signal strength and speed, but I imagine these will be worked out as more antennas go up and the technology matures.
I'm a wifi devotee. I jump on open networks all over the world. |

A friend of mine here in Tekirdağ is quite happy these days because he bought a snazzy new computer and the right whatever (i am a techno klutz too) for wireless internet access is inside it. Someone near his flat has wireless and he just sits on his balcony and taps in. "Free internet!", he chuckles. |
