I'm hoping to go to Quito in the next few months (July/Aug) to do some volunteer teaching. Il be coming from England, and most flights seem to be over 750 sterling for a return ticket. A few places (lonely planet, some other websites) have said that Quito is one of the cheapest places in S America to fly to, and quote around 450 return, but dont say who this is flying with. DAMN THEIR LACK OF INFORMATION AND SHODDY USE OF THE HARVARD REFERENCING SYSTEM. Nearly 800 seems pretty steep to me. Is there any cheap S American flight websites? Or any other cities that are relatively close by, that will be significantly cheaper?

Also, does anyone know if I can just get a one way ticket, or will the immigration people need to see proof that I will be leaving the country?

Thanks for any advice! Smile

Three sites I find useful are

orbitz www.orbitz.com

travelocity www.travelocity.com and

cheaptickets www.cheaptickets.com

I've found LAN Chile to be a good, reasonably priced airline. www.lan.com

Many agencies here advertise special rates from Quito to many other cities, including Los Angeles, miami, New York, Madrid, London , Paris and others. They fluctuate a lot but they range for London and Paris between $800 and $1,000 USD - which is in the 450-600 Sterling Range.

If you are coming on a tourist visa, you rarely need to show an outbound flight. That is because so many people fly into Quito, then use it as a base to travel to Peru, Chile and Colombia. Many fly into Quito, bus around, then fly out of, say Cuzco.

Of course, if you come on a different visa, or have to change your visa while here like we did, it gets MUCH more complicated!

Coming from Europe, your options are pretty much Iberia, KLM, or Air Madrid. How old is your lonely planet? 450 sterling sounds a little low to me, but check Air madrid, who seem to have the best prices. Or look into indirect flights, maybe via Caracas...

It's pretty much peak season when you're thinking about coming. Look around thoroughly, but quickly, as prices may jump as the time gets closer.

Best,
Justin

I am planning to travel to Quito and have found roundtrip flights for less than $500 from Florida USA where I live. If you can find a discount flight from the UK to Miami, Florida (Virgin Airlines?) and combine it with a cheap Miami/Quito flight you may well come out a couple hundred pounds ahead.
Good luck.
