Why do they have to be forced to do everything?

Can they not do anything because they are interested in it?

Laughing I live with four Turkish folks and my half-breed kiddie, as some of you may remember. Meal time is chaos because the tv is on top volume and EVERYONE is shouting. It made me understand why students used to say "ı'm going to ask something" or "i'm going to say something". I used to wonder why they said that, "Why don't they just say it?", I'd ask myself. Now I know. Even I do it now cause it's the ONLY way I can say anything. I have to break into the conversation. Laughing And my mother is law ALWAYS shouts. So does the father-in-law's sister. Shouting shouting shouting. Oh, my ears!!

yeah, shouting does seem to be the default volume for Turkish people - although I suspect it's the same around the Mediterranean. I love it when someone says, 'I'm going to say something', then takes 15 minutes to get to the point.......

then repeats it!

Twice! Rolling Eyes

Definition of racism
Quote:
a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

"a hobo is an itinerant worker, a career which sprang up during the depression. A hobo, unlike a bum or a tramp, is more than willing to work, but mostly for a short duration, as their main impetus is travel, the love of the journey above the actual destination. A bum is stationary, feeding off of those unfortunate enough to cross his path; a hobo merely travels from town to town, finding work when he can, but only for the sake of financing his next adventure. NEVER call a hobo a bum...they'll kick your sorry no-bo ass!"

In other words a TEFLer.

Wow, two classic "defenses". The old "I'm not a racist I have loads of black friends" response, in combination with an ad hominem attack.
I think I'll leave you to it ...

I think shouting is default in the city, when we go to the village, even tho it is still totally impossible to be alone (what kind freak are you? wanting to take a walk alone?) it is quieter, or the shouting is absorbed into the open air.

I think (sadly) turkish education is seriously slanted towards fear of failure rather than the pleasure of sucess. People are used to the carrot and stick model, and they need to be seriously aware of both the carrot and stick before doing anything. Self motivation (much like self walks, self journaling, self goals,) is not always encouraged here.

And hobo, could you clarify the line between racism and observation of cultural differences? If I say African Americans in general smoke more menthol cigarettes and drink more Sprite than the Harvard boys club, does this make me a racist? if I say Turks like eggplant more than people in England do?
For me, I always thought the line was drawn when it came to which group had the power over the other group, and how they were excersising it. Thus, your average american movie lover saying "hollywood was started by jews" could be seen as a statement of fact, instead of dangerous anti-semetism.
but hey hobo, let me know. PM me, if you want, cuz really, excersices in power, racism and cultural change are some of my favourite topics.

and, just to be really semantic and annoying, I'm not sure the Turks I know would agree with you defending thier "race". My husband for one would argue that Turks are not a race, but a nation. but like I said, PM me if you want.

Don't cry for too long .. according to our pc bozo's definition we have to hold the belief ...

bozo hobo wrote:

Making observations without holding the belief dosn't make us racist ... pc bozo hobo couldn't even get that right ...
