I would like to teach in this North Central region of China, in September, but am having trouble finding any Universities (except Xian). Does anyone know of colleges in these areas that may have vacancies? I cannot seem to find current info on unis with current email addresses at the moment for some reason(!?)
Are there any problems with these regions wages, dust storms unbearable, etc?
Any help appreciated.

Hi John,
I worked in Shanxi for my first job in China. It's quite dirty, but the people are very welcoming and friendly (not to mention good food). If you're interested, PM me and I can give you the contract information of an American friend of mine that is still teaching there. |

Although I tend to inform myself of goings on via less mainstream sources, I did recently treat myself to a little CNN, namely a news report on "China's Most Polluted City", in China's most polluted province, Linfen of Shanxi.
The footage might help you reach a decision. Watching the news story has certainly helped me understand why many of "escaped from Shanxi" undergraduates have expressed much joy at being able to smell something other than coal and chemicals when doing what we all love to do every day: breathe. |

My first job was in Shanxi- Xinzhou Teachers College. It was interesting. Very sweet students, very corrupt admin. And as much coal dust as you could swallow. My successor lasted a term before coming down with some respiratory ailment.
Gansu would be a more attractive proposition- I've seen some jobs advertised in Lanzhou, which isn't a bad place. |
