just wondering,
can anyone verify if it is possible to gain a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics from Open University Australia without an undergraduate degree?? I have seen this floated around on daves and upon searching the website for eligibility requirments found this
Any student is eligible to register for individual units in this program. Prior study of linguistics is not a prerequisite.
Students wishing to work toward the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics or the Master of Linguistics must meet the following criteria:
Have a bachelors degree with at least a credit average in the final year; or
Have a bachelors pass degree with demonstrable professional experience at a senior level in a relevant area; or
Have a Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics with a credit in
each unit.
now...
does this mean I could say study the units for the grad cert....(with credit average) then work towards getting the Masters all without the bachelor degree?????
(i have emailed the co-ordinator regarding this but wanted to hear if anyone on daves has practical experience) |

I've never heard of anyone obtaining a Master's degree without a Bachelor's degree being completed first. A Master's degree is called a "graduate" degree for a reason - it means you have already graduated from university with an "undergraduate" degree.
I think that by saying a degree in linguistics is not a prerequisite, they mean that other major areas of study are acceptable. However, normally you will need a BA to be eligible to apply for an MA.
I have a BA in English and just received my offer of admission to UNE's MAAL (Applied Linguistics) degree program. My first degree is in literature, not linguistics, but is still a Bachelor of Arts degree and ergo, is an acceptable prerequisite. |

In Ontario if you are a skilled techie you can become a certified teacher without a degree. You go to the same teachers' college as everyone else and do the same work. The only difference is that they get a diploma and everyone else gets a B.Ed. However, these techies are highly qualified in their fields. Perhaps the school you're looking at has diploma options for individuals who have been working in ESL for many years. I doubt they would let you into the Master's program though. |

It's not common, but there are some accredited and reputable universities that will accept non-BA holders to enter into their graduate programs. Usually there are some prerequisites, such as being 'mature' and over a certain age, having extensive experience in the field being studied, etc. |

Do bear in mind that if you get the Masters without a Bachelor's you will not be accepted by goverment schools or colleges in the Gulf that check up carefully. |

Who checks carefully? Even your exalted institution doesn't do that. |

Some employers, particularly in the Middle East (who pay very well) check VERY carefully. |

Apparently, the personal valet of George Bush is getting a free ticket to Harvard Business School in the fall . He dropped out of college after a year:

Bushs Personal Aide To Enroll at Business School
Gottesman, college dropout and former beau to Bush daughter, to begin in the fall
By PARAS D. BHAYANI
Crimson Staff Writer
A 26-year-old college dropout who carries President Bushs breath mints and makes him peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches will follow in his bosss footsteps this fall when he enrolls at Harvard Business School (HBS).
Though it is rare for HBSor any other professional or graduate schoolto admit a student who does not have an undergraduate degree, admissions officers made an exception for Blake Gottesman, who for four years has served as special assistant and personal aide to Bush.
Gottesman, a Texas native who attended Claremont-McKenna College in California for one year, has long had ties to the Bush family. He dated the presidents daughter, Jenna Bush, nearly ten years ago when he attended St. Andrews Episcopal School of Austin.
After completing his freshman year at Claremont in 1999, he left to join the Bush presidential campaign and later served as a junior aide to former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card. In February 2002, he became the presidents personal assistant.
In his current role, Gottesman performs a wide range of duties, from dog-sitting the presidents Scottish terriers, Barney and Miss Beazley, to carrying the presidents speeches and giving him the two-minute warning before a speech begins. |
A tip of the hat to The Harvard Crimson |

I spent six years checking very carefully. I know of nobody hired in the ELC with a first degree from a non-accredited university. As for people with forged degrees all staff have to get the degree validated at the Saudi Cultural Mission, which contacts the University Registry to confirm the degree was issued legitimately. |
