Other than copyright infringement, what do you think of New Oriental? I mean New Oriental the exam-prep center, not New Oriental foreign language something something center in Yangshuo.

Do you have experience with their prep materials? Did you find them beneficial to students? Teachers? Opinions? Do you actually know people who have passed TOEFL, TOEIC, GRE, GMAT after a New Oriental course?

Just curious. Thanks!

They offered me a job once, but I declined cuz it seemed a like a trouble for the pay they were offering.

I do know that the school enjoys a fantastic reputation with students in Beijing for getting results. Though my Chinese niece signed up for a prep there course over the Spring holiday but was shocked by the squalid dorm conditions (no electricity!) and ended up staying with me for the holiday -which at least chalks up to free oral practice with a native speaker.

I think New Oriental does a great job marketing themselves. They even train the teachers to pump up the school to the students. I remember when they wanted to hire me being told that my success would serve as an inspiration to the students and that I should project that success onto them. Success? If I'm accepting a gig at your school for 180/hr without travel reimbursement, how successful do you think I am? Of course, I didn't say that outright, as it was really beside the point anyway. They're very good at projecting an image and getting the students all hyped up, which, although sickenly superficial, does seem to get good results.

Oh, that was some time ago, maybe four years. The offer was part time, 180/hr. I declined, but who knows, something like that could be a foot in the door to bigger and better things over there.

I also interviewed last year at one of their private training centers, and they gave me a rough offer that looked pretty good. Only problem was taht they wouldn't get back to me on specific contract issues, so I went elsewhere. I'd say they're definately worth checking into. I know some of their teachers get relatively famous and even have opportunities to get published. I won't say any more though, because honestly, I don't have any direct knowledge. Better to wait and see if one of their actual employees can jump in here tell you the real deal over there.
