I got a public school job in April for 210,000 Yen a month. After taxes it goes down to about 175,000. There are plenty of other rewards and I only work 4 days a week and am free to look for other extra employment.
Now from my interview I had asked the school if I needed to leave the country to get a working visa and they laughed after they heard the translation in Japanese. But somewhere along the lines they forgot about this meanwhile I thought it was all clear and being processed. I even had a Kanji stamp in my passport (that actually had nothing to do with my period of stay). So when my boss came up to me last week saying "Do you have..." and he looked down at a yellow sticky where my eyeballs nearly popped out and landed on "working visa?"
If immigration found out that I was working without a visa I pictured myself improving my sex life in jail. But now it's fine and I got my tourist visa cancelled the day before it expired. They like me and got me a 3 year visa. We'll see how it goes.
My question is should I ask for the taxes back for my previous month and a half of work? |

Ask for it back. I'd like to see what their response is.
By the way, why do you feel that you should get your taxes back for the previous month and a half of work? |

Taxes are what you pay to the government, not your employer. If you have paid too much or you think they have taken too much out you file a tax return at the end of the year and if you are owed money it will come out in your tax return. Dont hold your breath expecting your employer to calculate your taxes for you. thats what the tax office is for.
35,000 yen in taxes sounds a lot for such a low income.Thats about 20% of your salary. Are you paying health insurance and pension as well? Those are non-refundable until you leave the country, and health insurance is not a tax but an insurance premium required by law on public employees. Big difference. |

Paul, public health insurance is a premium required by law on public and private employees. Big difference. |

I wondered if I should have asked for taxes back for the time I was working without a worker's permit. I thought I was working legitimately but the communication lines are shady at times.
I pay health insurance and I look forward to the pension.
Thank you for your replies and input. |

You have to pay income taxes on earned income whether you have a work visa or not. Immigration and tax office are separate issues.
Anyway you dont get the overpaid taxes back from employer but file a tax return at the end of the year by asking for a tax withdrawal form from your employer. Tax office will calculate a refund if one is owing. |

You're right about immigration and tax being seperate Paul, but if you only have one employer, they should calculate and refund any income tax overpayment. If you have more than one employer it's more complicated. |
