Hello Vietnam board,

I am considering starting a website about teaching English in Vietnam. I see a need for this, as the old www.vietnam-notes.com website is dead, and there currently is no other website with a focus on teaching English in Vietnam. There is plenty of information on the web about teaching in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, etc. There is even a website that focuses on teaching in Cambodia. Unfortunately, Vietnam is being left out. Vietnam is a wonderful country (one of my favorites), and, based on what little I know, a good destination for teaching English. Thus (despite the fact that I won't be teaching in Vietnam until at least this summer) I am considering starting a website for expats in Vietnam, with a focus on teaching English. If I did this, would anyone be interested in contributing material to the site? Short of that, would you at least visit the site? Ideally, someone actually living and working in Vietnam right now would start such a website, but if no one else is willing to step up to the plate, I will consider it. What do you all think?

Cheers,
Kirk

James T, I think there is a site for Vietnam. It's called something like ESLmekong.com. They sent me an email a few weeks back to notify me of their start-up.

here we are---www.mekongesl.com (in lower case)

Not much activity lately, but they answered most of my questions (by reading through all the past posts.)

Unfortunately the site has been down as we are putting new software and features together, while getting a new host. The problems should be rectified today (Dec 11).

Thanks

Other good VN expat sites, not purely teacher-oriented, are www.elephantguide.com (good for info on bars & restaurants) and www.livinginvietnam.com.

I am actually working on a site for teachers here as I have contact information from over 90 businesses and 200 locations in town and 2 years teaching exp worth of dos and donts for newbies. Most importantly I am blacklisting schools who mess with pay and setting notice for backpacker schools to give anyone looking for work a heads up. I was pretty bored being unemployed before tet and got motivated to put together all my information and a site is in the works. I am interested in any features/info that you would be interested in seeing and I wll try to integrate them into the site. Send me a pm with any ideas and I will do my best to make the site. Dont expect to see it for a few months as I am in the process of teaching myself dreamweaver, but i do garuntee that it will be helpful.

lol, I visit MekongESL and Daves daily too and will continue after my site is up. My site is much different and focuses only on HCMC and provides tons of things I have collected while teaching ESL in the USA, South Korea, and now Vietnam. Its my first website and I was just really bored before tet so I started learning dreamweaver. Its still a few weeks off, but I am putting on a few finishing touches and a few teachers have been contributing to the site BEFORE it gets published. I am looking for school addresses and contacts in Go Vap, Hoc Mon, Nha Be, Can Gio, Cu Chi.... you know the booney districts where teachers dread going too. I have a few, but looks like Im just going to have to make a day of heading out there myself.

Thanks for the post Micro. I just noticed the date on my last post and had flashbacks on how long it actually took to get things up and running. yes everyone, www.saigonesl.com is finally up and running. Although it is still a work in progress, there are a lot of school contact information pages to help with job searches and plenty of links for in class supplements to view.

We still need to get together for that beer sometime soon Smile
