Hi,

I've been offered a job in Inner Mongolia (Hohhot) and have been searching the web for information about the place, but the information provided was quite limited.
Are there a fair number of expatriates? Is it fairly modern in Hohhot? What about banking and commerce? What are the good and the bad about the city?

Would be great if anyone can shed some light on the matter.

Cheers:-)

There are a few variations of the city's name. Hohhot, Huhehaote (from pinyin), and Huhhot are some of them. The official web site is at www.huhhot.gov.cn

There are expats living in the city, but they are not a common sight in the city. You will probably have to go into a disco bar to find them.

Well, that depends on your definition of "modern". It is not a village town, but if you do go, don't expect to find pubs everywhere and definitely forget about Western restaurants.

All your typical Chinese banks are there.

The good thing is you'd taste the best lamb in your life and if you a re a meat lover, you will love Mongolian food as they eat a lot of beef and lamb. Sadly, that's probably the only good thing about the city. It is definitely NOT a cheap city to live in, as fresh produce have to be shipped in from far away places so prices are not cheap. Clothes are cheaper in a bigger city here in Changchun than in Hohhot, and the Mandarin spoken there is often full of Shanxi accent. Also, large supermarkets like Carrefour and Walmart don't exist because they can't survive in that city. I did visit a very big supermarket located near the Medical College, but it was not even busy on a Sunday. The city is extremely dry and dusty with little to do (there are a few discos but I never visited them except one). It can reach -20 Celsius in winter plus windchill, and between March and June you have to endure the frequent sandstorms or should I say, DUSTSTORMS. If you are curious about Mongolian culture, the city definitely doesn't offer much. You are better off going to other Inner Mongolian cities that have a majority of Mongolian population.

Which school are you interested in teaching at? I can probably tell you something about the school too.
