Does anyone study full time and teach enough hours to live on? If so could you recommend any programs or Uni's where this is available. Had a spot lined up in Chengdu but the teaching hours and wages kept getting reduced so have pulled out. Any help greatly appreciated.

I worked 12 periods a week for 4000/rmb last semester while studying. Enough to avoid starvation and keep a roof over my head, but I wouldn't say I enjoyed glamourous lifestyle and I wasn't left with much for travelling.
Personally, I thought teaching English and studying Chinese was about as fun as screwing a corkscrew into my arm, most likely because I was a middle school babysitting 500 devils. The motivation and energy to study was destroyed daily by their consistent whining and nonesense.
I probably would have had a better time, had I been employed by a private, adult oriented institution.
Best bet is to steer clear from English completely. I envied my fellow students hanging out on dad's dollar. Most of the Europeans even had their studies completely financed by their home governments. |

i'm hoping to do that next year, superfrank. well, from working the past two years, i've saved a small sum, which i'm hoping, in conjunction with part-time work, will provide for me through the year.
where were you looking to study in chengdu? do you have info about universities/programs/costs? i'm trying to research but i'm not making much headway. i know of a few places in chengdu that might be hiring; if you need contacts, let me know. |

My Uni now offers foreigners a minimum schedule of 11.6 hours a week . That's enough time for me to study the DELTA by distance which I begin next month . I thought about doing the Chinese course here but I'm not too keen on joining just a load of Russians and Koreans in class . Also I don't have great concentration in class and like to study on my own .
The course here is pretty cheap and seems Ok but it runs in the morning and you'd probably be scheduled to teach some of those . You may be able to negotiate with them though or look for a course outside the University . If I were considering learning Chinese I would as a previous poster said forget any teaching of English whatsover . You wouldn't need that much cash to survive a term here . Save your money Frank and stop pissing it up the wall
Good luck . PM if you want details of my Uni. |

I study and tutor.
It's far better than when I taught at a school. |

Cheers for the help team, I will get back to you on this. As you know China is a constant state of flux so not sure of my movements from one day to the next. Voodi, I will get that info to you as soon as I can. It's all at home right now.
