In recent weeks, the military here in Khartoum (the capital) has been on high alert. They have been surrounding areas all over town and searching for weapons. All cars are being stopped and searched. Military weapons are visable everywhere. Last Thursday night, an expat misunderstood the signal to stop and his car was shot up. Until this crisis resolves itself, all expats should stay clear of Khartoum. In the words of a knowing student, "It's not safe here".
When this eventually quiets down, there are some nice universities to work at but I would avoid the langauge schools like Cambridge International and such. At a recent party, one of the now departing teachers told me that even though the Cambridge has been open only a year and a half, the first Academic Manager burned the school books in the parking lot, the second AM locked his door one day and never came back and the current AM has given her notice. No one seems to stay for their entire contract.
