Good Morning,
I would be grateful to receive any feedback and recommendations on the Talk and Text academies based in Bangkok and Phuket. I am leaving the UK for Thailand in August and any help would be appreciated. |

Text and Talk, not Talk and Text. To quote myself:

Generally they're better than their advertising lets on. They have some good trainers, but their home-made course materials are a little odd.
Along with TEFL International, they are the biggest of the course providers in Thailand, so their certificate is fairly well-known there. They're much less well-known outside Thailand, so their cert counts for correspondingly less there.
You could probably do better, but you could certainly do worse. |

Thanks mate,
My concern is the use of the qualification outside of Thailand and I am considering other options also.
Is there a Celta course that you would recommend other than the ECC one? |

ECC have been at it the longest, so all things being equal I'd go with them. There's not usually that much difference between different CELTA providers though, so you might just decide on the basis of location, course dates etc. |

Thanks
I figure that as I will probably work in BKK for a year or so I should try a different location to study beforehand. Phuket looks like a nice location so I shall research a litle more.
Thanks for the help |

In most of Asia - the name brand of the TEFL Certificate doesn't matter all that much. Most employers are more concerned that the certificate meets the "international standard" of 100+ classroom hours and a minimum of six hours of observed teaching practice (critical!).
"How to Choose a TEFL School" can help you make sure you pick a school that meets YOUR needs:

Good luck! |

Many thanks
Having researched as many posts as I possibly could on Text and Talk, CELTA and Tefl International, I am leaning towards Text and Talk.
The CELTA sounds very professional and the course appears to be very strong yet the posts it carries have put me off somewhat
The TI sounds great if "Dave" is there and that is somewhat of a lottery.
Text and Talk does not appear to have a bad word said about it and has a good feel to it.
How important is it to study in the location that you wish to teach thereafter? I want to teach in BKK but would like to study in Phuket. |

It's not that important - but it helps.
If you do the Text-and-Talk TEFL course on Phuket,
they will surely help you find work in Bangkok.
They are well connected &
they have a good reputation.
In fact, one of their top bosses
is a regular poster on this forum,
and I would trust him with my life.
OK, my life is worth $29.95
but still ...

T & T is a professional outfit. You will gain the confidence to teach. And their course is good value for money. As for transportability, a verifiable work history will get you almost anywhere. Certainly more than some fresh-faced kid who's just completed his/her CELTA. A technique I infrequently but successfully use is to tell the English Dept. head of a (govt.) school where I'm teaching that I'm doing an on-line MA. The university needs evidence of my teaching history etc. A couple of weeks after receiving the evidence, I have to leave due to some sort of dire emergency. A little bit of subterfuge but if you tell them that you need a teaching history verification in order to leave for a better job the actual chances of obtaining it are next to zero. |

Thanks to all that have assisted with this query.
I have enrolled in the Text and Talk course that commences on August 28th in Bangkok.
Hope to meet a few of you out there! |
