I just spent the previous three months working with the Australian Cultural Centre in Lahore and would like to offer advice to any teachers considering taking a position at this institution. I found out about the ACC in Lahore through esljobs.com, but unfortunately the online ads do not do a good job of describing the actual institution or teaching position.
For example, on edufind.com the ad claims that the centre offers every possible type of English course, visa assistance, sports facilities, student internet facilities and that the minimum student age is 12. The truth is that the ACC is a new language centre without any set programs or curriculum. Most classes are tailor made one on one. The only set program is an IELTS prep program based on a self study book. If you enjoy teaching one on one, creating your own curriculum, and are able to deal with flexible and changing schedules, this job may work for you. Pay is low (10,000 to 20,0000 rupees a month which is about $180 to $320 US) and may not be on time. Also, the company was unable to offer visa assistance so if you are thinking of coming it's best to take care of your work visa before arrival. Seriously, it is worth the hassle of doing it from wherever you are rather than trying to do it here.
Anyway, if you are thinking of working with this company please send me a private message and I can talk to you in detail about my experience.
This more current ad for the ACC accurately represents the situation, although the three native teachers mentioned have left the centre.

Any sentance with the words "Australia" and "culture" in would raise my suspicions from the start. |

I have a question! Which influenced your decision more, the $180/month or Lahore, Pakistan? Please discuss the logic behind your decision. I'd also like to know why you were surprised that things didn't work out. |

Is it possible that SkaHeathr56 is actually a C.I.A. operative in deep cover? |

Hey guys,
Actually I love being in Lahore. Despite the heat (it has already reached over 115F) Lahore is one of the coolest cities I've lived in. I'm still here and have found out that any other foreigner working here and teaching is making over 60,000 rupees ($1000)/month or 1 to 2 lakh rupees which is 100,000 to 200,000 rupees. I've taken two new jobs, teacher training and lecturing at women's university for an MA TESOL program, that pay much better and have less hours which are scheduled unlike at the ACC. A friend of mine, another former teacher of the ACC, got offered an advertising job at $2000/month on his first interview.
Lahore is great because it's an up and coming city. There is so much development going on here yet it retains it's charm. You can have anything you want here. Rave parties with supermodels on the weekend while living next door to buffalos and donkeys in the middle of the city. I definitely recommend coming to Lahore because the opportunity is so great for any foreign educators, especially in universities, commerical language schools and education development. And hey Afghanistan is right next door. I'm heading north to see if I can check out some caves and maybe gain that reward.... |

Poor wasn't it. I think I got off very lightly with that whole remark, at least your sense of humour isn't lacking. |

This kind of posting doesn't surprise me. Joe Australia decides to open an institute. It is a business, but with a warm and fuzzy name, teachers are happy with a lower a salary because they THINK they are giving something back to the community, all the while the owner rakes in the profits. |
