Hello,
I am an American and recently moved to Jakarta. I'm married to an Indonesian national and have two kids with her, which is why I am here. We have a house in bekasi and although everyone on here seems to rag on the place I really don't think it is that bad and am really enjoying myself. Of course, I probably have a more comfortable life style than most here.
Now my question is where should I go to find employment? I need a visa so I can stay here and an acceptable income. I ran in to financial problems while I was in college so I don't have a degree although I did go to college (computer software engineering technology). I finished my TEFL certificate with Young Learners and BE and was planning to find a job teaching English. The problem is I have no experience (college then US Military for 6 years) and can't seem to find a job. Any advice on the matter would be much appreciated. |

If you just need a job, any job, go on the EF website for Indonesia and call the phone numbers of the various Jakarta area schools. I'm not recommending them as an employer, but it's a job that will get you a visa. If you can stick it out for a year you might be able to progress to something better afterwards. |

If you have a real TEFL certificate as you claim, you should have no problem getting a job. You are better qualified than probably 90% of the the people currently teaching EFL around here. Hold out for something better than EF, I'd say. A school in Bekasi called FBI often advertises for teachers. I can't tell you if they're better or worse than EF. Or try TBI or IALF. |

A real tefl certificate - good luck with TBI or IALF
I believe they expect a degree and several years of experience.
