Yesterday a man from Banorte came to my apartment and wanted some information for my AFORE. I have never dealt with Banorte at all. He said he had spoken to someone at my school, but I'm not sure who. Anyway, today I have to go to the bank and take my identification and CURP number.

Does this sound legitimate to you? Is this normally how AFORE accounts are opened?

Thanks everyone.

Thats how mine was done, but nobody came to my apartment! I find that kind of alarming.

I did everything at my work site or at the bank. Ask at the bank to see if they sent the man to your house.

It's not unsual, the AFORE reps get comision and they have been known to get addresses of new employees off the human resources department. There was one really obnoxious rep for ING in our town a couple of years ago and I had to tell him to stop harassing the English teachers. He did show up at a couple of their apartments and really freaked them out. Usually they just come to find you at school, because at one place they can talk to many people.

If you think you'll work long enough to build up some money in it, be choosy about your afore. They are not all the same and the best for person X is not the best for person Y, and some of the international banks have more ways for you to transfer the money their institutions in to other countries that have similar programs.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I've decided to take MELEE's advice and check out some of the other banks before I make a decision.
