Hello all! Just wondering if anyone out there has any information on any eikaiwas or other sources of TEFL jobs in Kyoto. I'm a US citizen with a BA and both a CELTA and an SIT certification and a smattering of Japanese (2 years in college), but no teaching experience to speak of. I'm interested in learning as much as possible about Japanese culture and language as I can, so I'm leaning towards positions that could afford a bit more time off--perhaps as an ALT or somesuch. Still, any lists of schools in Kyoto would be great so that I could start sending out resumes. Thanks a million...

Tom

I'm no expert, but from everything I've heard, Kyoto has very few schools, and thousands of English teachers wanting to work there. Good luck!

I live in Kyoto myself and a teach at a university but you will find that compared to osaka, Kyoto is tiny (though pretty large in itself) there are language schools here but they rarely advertise, and its my guess that many people living in Kyoto will commute to Osaka which is only a 30 minute train ride away, plus connections. Jobs are pretty scarce here- I do hear of high school teaching jobs in Kyoto occasionally but you have to be living here to get a realistic chance of success.

You might also want to try other surrounding areas as well, such as Otsu, in Shiga where they may be jobs as well. Linked below is a page with a list of schools in Kyoto- it may be out of date but you can try contacting them (the city code is (075) before the phone number.

Its my guess also that cold calling them amy also be a waste of time unless they are hiring but there is no harm in trying. If you are out of the country many will want a face to face interview and they will not sponsor you sight unseen, hoping that you may one day turn up. I would also make sure that your cover letter and resume is up to scratch, and suitable for seeking jobs in Japan as if its too long and contains irrelevant material they may just disregard it

Anyway here is the link:
