I am in a contract now-it says until Aug 8th for ARC purposes but I am finished at end of June. Current school wants me to sign a new contract as there are numerous applicants and they want to fill the staff roster. My question is: If I sign a new contract is existing contract then void? And what is the possible problem if I reneg that contract due to another offer I take three weeks from now? ie- I sign one here but then a school I am waiting to hear back from gives me the green light to sign their contract.

Any help is appreciated.

If your contract goes till August 8 for any reason then that is what you could be held to work no matter what the reasons for this stated date may be.

The new contract would come into effect the day that it states that it comes into effect and would replace your current contract at that time. So if you signed a contract with a start date of July 1st then the original contract that ran until August 8th would be superseded by the new contract.

Monetary penalty, cancellation of your work permit hence resident visa hence ARC; and possible teacher blacklisting which will prevent you from working in Taiwan as a teacher ever again. These are all possibilities if you break your contract.

It might be best to either make a committment to your current school or leave them if you don't want to work for them, but don't try to hedge your bets as you may end up in a more inconvenient position that way.

If they already have many other teachers wanting to take over your job then I would suggest just telling them that you want to leave when you finish at the end of June. You will leave and another teacher will replace you. See what they say. Maybe they will tell you that you have to stay until August. Maybe they will tell you to give them one month's notice. It might be worth enquiring about any penalties incurred. If you are at an independent school or franchise this may well be the best option. If you are at a large chain this might not work quite as well.

The biggest problem that I can see is that you are looking to keep your school as a second choice if this other school doesn't come through for you.

Call this new school now. Tell them that you are eager to work for them but you need an immediate answer in order to give notice to your current school. Otherwise they may likely procrastinate for the next three weeks and then ask you to come the day before they want you to start work.

the deal is I have three schools I am intersted in- all have some good things and bad things. my current school said i could have a certain grade then said no so i didn't sign but don't want to be left short so...i believe that you can leave a contract if you haven't yet started it - in other words it becomes effective as was said perviously on the date- i will make sure the 'date' is for mid Aug- then i think i have covered my ace.
