I would suggest you teach English in China for ten years before writing the book then write from a personal perspective. How long have you taught English in China for?

George Carlin?

OP, I suggest PMing William Wallace. However, he is currently trying to escape China.

In my previous town of Zhanjiang, a Canadian lady's been teaching at the same uni for more than 10 years. Last I remember she's running 15years at the uni. She has special status in the community already.

10 years teaching in China? Sad Doubt there would be many people who have done that. There are probably quite a few who have been teaching here for 5 years. Most people get sick of the place after a year or two.

I know a man in my city who has been teaching for 9 years at the same school. He is a little eccentric though. I wonder if he was odd before coming to China, or if being in China for so long has caused him to acquire these traits.

The ultimate question. Does teaching in China cause one to lose his/her mind as a result, or is the decision to teach in China for a long period of time evidence of madness.

To amanda: the folks who come here, besides backpackers, pro-eslers, and language students, are from the fringe.

I've taught 7 years full time and part time in Taipei and China, as well as almost 3 years in Seoul, Daegu, Daejeon, and Suwon.

Let me have a go at this ultimate question. Social environments can bring out predisposed personality traits. For example, a person may not have opportunities to be express certain traits in his/her home country. A typical example can be found with Western men, unable to share power with Western women in relationships, coming to Asia to express their trait of dominance.

If they stayed in their home countries, they would be labeled as Losers. Here, in Asia, many women see them as Winners.

To your question. For many FTs, coming to China, leaving behind almost everybody and everything, probably had a predisposed trait of ? (irresponsibility? adventure? madness?). The social environment in China, being completely opposite (read cultural differences or chaos) to such FTs - allows them to express their predisposed traits (read borderline personality disorders?)
