I've looked at the variety of jobs around the globe and continue to be interested in Honduras. But, I'm having trouble finding information or jobs. Maybe there just isn't much? So, here are my questions...I have a MA TESOL and 10 years experience. Where can I find the university jobs in Honduras?

If I am able to find those illusive university jobs in Honduras Wink which pay better than average ESL teaching job, will I have enough to live in a decent, safe place, to afford daycare for my little one, and travel back to the US after a year for a vacation? Of course, I don't intend to live the tourist lifestyle...no need...I'm happy to eat and shop local-style.
Does anyone have any answers?

I haven't posted to Korea, or the Middle East forums...but if you've worked in another country and have some insight...I sure would love to know.

thanks all Razz

Latin American schools rarely advertise or hire "sight unseen"; they much prefer to find candidate by word-of-mouth, as they wonder in from the street waving a CV, etc.

I can't say about Honduras in particular, but you will likely have the best results if you show up at the universities in person with copies of your resume and ask for interviews in person. A quick search on Google yields web page addresses for several universities in Honduras:

I don't have the website, but if you have an MA and experience, there is an outfit called International Schools Search (or something similar) that hires for K-12 schools everywhere. It is like www.iss.edu or something

I know someone who worked in Tegucigalpa for 2 yrs thru them , but I am not in regular contact anymore...

Why Honduras?
What are the may appeals and can you find those or some of those elsewhere?
You could do alright in Mexico. I have 21 month old twins, they get free day care as one of the benefits of my job. The only thing I don't like is I work LONG hours so I'm not with them as much as I like and I'm pretty close to running myself ragged!

One of the benefits of having 21 month old twin, regardless of your professions, I'd have thought!

Try the Laureate International University system. There's two new campus'. Your MA will work just fine, but once again, there's the question of a work permit.

My first and most important question is why Honduras? In my experience, universities in Honduras are not that keen to hire foreign teachers because those with money travel to the US or Europe to study because Honduras has a lack of serious educational institutions.

Bilingual and International schools are a different story and you could pick up a job from abroad with one. International schools pay a livable wage, bilingual schools pay a substitence wage and you really couldn't do it with a child. If you had a good reason to be in Honduras then maybe, but if not? Forget it. Then there are the safety issues in Honduras. Honduras is very dangerous. Murders and kidnappings are a daily occurrence.

As Melee said, Mexico might be a very good choice for you. If interested in Asia, I know several single parents who have been successful raising their very young children in Thailand. There are other options, but if you have a good reason to be in Honduras?

GREAT information. Thanks everybody. I've thought Honduras was a relatively quiet non-commercial-crazy environment. However, I'm not looking to get myself or my daughter into any trouble....maybe we'll take a miss for now. Hmmmm, keeps coming up as Thailand being a pretty good place for a single parent. Also, I didn't realize that Mexico was a better place for Uni ESL and parenting than Honduras. I'll keep checking out Mexico...and the other places mentioned. thanks
