I see that they are advertising in Zory again for the CALLAN Method. I'm looking for POSITIVE comments from people who have taught there... anyone? |

We've discussed Callan before.
I think there's a thread on it in the general Europe forum.
Unless its what you want to do I wouldn't.
I was offerred work with Callan when I was jobless and I'm glad that I didn't take it.
For one thing you won't learn grammar as a teacher nor will the students.
The second thing is most schools aren't interested in teachers who have taught Callan. |

Eastern Europe? Come to Poland, the heart of the New Europe!

Want to teach abroad? Poland is waiting!
'Tower' School of English using the Callan Method from Zory and Jastrzebie Zdroj in Southern Poland is looking for enthusiastic candidates willing to teach English in Poland in the new academic year, starting in September (10 month, renewable contract till June 2006). |
I saw their ad on this website.
"The new Europe?" As opposed to the "Old Europe." Was this written by the Bush administration? |

I have worked with Callan Method for a few months now and I can find only two good things about it: little preparation is required and once you have taught the same material a few times it becomes second nature. The students are great and most of them love the communicative approach of Callan.
Bad things: the Method is old and not updated to speak either about relevant issues nor does it read/speak in English that is commonly used in the modern world today.............even in parts of England. There are countless grammar mistakes in all editions which you then have to undo - not always easy as the students have rote-learned it. It is extremely boring for the teacher, as it is for the students a lot of the time. There is no development for teachers whatsoever, there is no opportunity to concept-check the material you are delivering - although I deviate from the Method in order to do so [ which the students really appreciate , but my boss would kill me ] and it is insulting to any educator as the handbook reads: " Anyone can teach this, you don't even have to be a teacher". It is, for the businessman the same as buying a MacDonalds' Franchise.
I would advise you to choose something else where you can use a variety of resources........and that includes you, the teacher - not the 'question-asker'.
Good Luck |

Sounds like Callan is good then!
The thing i hated so much about teaching was the prep time involved and energy expounded in teaching the lessons.
If i can make some Parrots speak with little effort, then why not?
*Hurray For Callan*
