I'm back in Canada for the summer after a long haul at a chain school in Italy, and just wanted to let others know that there is definitely money to be made tutoring privately!
I put up a dozen posters around one of the local universities and have had lots of interest. I'm currently working with a middle school student twice a week, a visiting professor twice a week, an international student once a week, and occasional proofreading/editing jobs. I got a phone call last night from a group of five students who are willing to be wait-listed for an opening in my schedule, and the young boy wants to extend the length of his lessons! All of this is on top of my real summer job.
I interviewed at a couple of language schools here and wasn't able to get the type of schedule I would have needed to earn a decent salary, but I'm absolutely positive I could be making about $800 per month on top of my normal salary if I accepted every tutoring request that came my way (and sacrificed anything resembling a social life). I'm not really interested in making any more real "committments" so I'm going to put up some posters for proofreading/editing work (for both ESL and normal students) that I can do at 2.00 am if I feel so inclined. |

I'm moving back to Victoria in September after 4 years teaching in Turkey and have been wondering about the situation there for teaching. May I ask how much you charge per hour? In Istanbul you can pretty much charge anything- seriously, $100 is not unheard of I doubt it's the same back home though, since, well, most people speak English so there is no shortage...
Also, did you put your posters up at U Vic? In the SUB or where? Am curious, because I think I'd prefer to tutor when I get back, rather than going back to the lingo schools where I used to work. |

I charge $20 per hour, except with one student who pays $15 (mainly because he's the age that I'm going to be working with in my B.Ed program, but also because we do the work five minutes from my house at my convenience). I put up posters at UVic in all the different buildings (focusing on areas where there are a lot of ESL students) and also put ads in the newsletters at the schools I attended when I did K-12 (it was free- most teachers and office staff remember me). |

What about working at UVIC? What kind of program do they have there for teaching ESL students to get their English level up to standard? |

Thanks. Looks a bit like a glorified language school. I was hoping they were more of a prep program for the university itself. I wonder if their teachers are UVIC faculty members. |

$20 seems a bit low for private lessons, esp 1-to-1s. Five years ago Itaught in Victoria language schools for 25 an hour. You could probably charge more- I used to teach at Pan Pacific and their teachers got $30 for one to ones...who knows what the school charged before the teacher got their cut. |

Never in my life have I seen an ad for a job at the UVic ELC. I read the UVic job postings weekly (even when overseas) and I've simply never seen an ad. A few years back I emailed them and asked if they put job vacancies online, and they said they do... I think a lot of their staff are UVic profs though- I know a few of my old profs used to teach there during the summer. |
