| Just found out that if I have residency I get a tax break if I buy an apartment. Anybody know what is needed to get the residency permit? Can I get it after 8 years living here? |

You mean permanent resident status?
Ten years of continuous residency if you are single. After 4-5 years if you have a spouse visa and after one 3-year stint on spouse visa. PR will depend on other factors as your economic and financial stability and your 'contribution' to Japan. |

| I'm on a PR visa but haven't realised any tax breaks. Mind you, I have not bothered with buying property in Japan. |

How do you expect to get a tax break with no property. Visas come from immigration. You dont pay less tax because you have PR status.
You can deduct part of your interest payments for your mortgage against your income but if you have no loan you cant claim a deduction . |

All right, PaulH, you've obviously misunderstood my post. But the language of your posts often come off as being accusing and overly direct, I think.
Anyway, about tax breaks of a PR visa I have really haven't realised any.
On the other hand, with a PR in hand I think you'd have a better chance of gettting a loan from a bank in order to buy your property.
Good luck in getting in debt!!!!! |

Yes. It's interesting. People often get quite annoyed when you don't give them the answers they want to hear. I learned that lesson again in person recently when, after listening to someone drone on and on about his political beliefs, I offered my own. Big mistake. Now he will not speak to me ...
Actually, I take that back. Being blut means I don't have to listen to him anymore. It's all good. |
