gems/jewelry:

in the market for buying some stuff for the lady back home. is jewelry worth buying here? i'm not talkin expensive stuff oruncut stones, but typical sterling silver $20-30 stuff u can get back home. saw some cool designs with mother of pearl/etc. etc. worth pickin up? or is it a rip?

also same question for thai silk. is it really the sh*t? worth buying? how do i know what's good and what's not? what's a good thing to buy that's cheap and worthwhile? or should i avoid it entirely?

i'm not even gonna start on tailored suits yet. don't think it's really worth it at the moment.

Try (sorry for the spelling) "Ya Wa Lat" a street in BKK where you can buy some really good gold and silver jewellery. Don't try to haggle as the jewellery is calculated using the price of gold that day and the weight of the piece.

MBK Center at BTS National Stadium is great for souvenirs.

You'll find everything from soup to nuts ...

and lots of little jewelry shops too.

Yawalat (Yaowarat Road) mentioned by MPG,

is located in Bangkok's Chinatown District,

near MRT Hua Lamphong Station on

Bangkok's new Underground.

Busy Yaowarat road is Chinatown's main street, and surely has one of the greatest concentrations of gold shops anywhere, reflecting the love of gold the Thai-Chinese are often thought to have. There's dozens of them, all dazzlingly brightly colored, and with mainly very good prices. There are also plenty of restaurants round here, where you can get birds-nest soup, dim sum, shark fin soup and other traditional Chinese delicacies.

A lot of beautiful silver is made in the Northern provinces also. If you have time check out Chiang Rai, or chiang Mai.

I have not bought any silver in a while but last time I did I got some nice rings for about 5 dollars each. If you have a design or a ring many of the artisans can duplicate it for you. Most jewelers charge about 5 dollars for labor and whatever the cost of the material per ring, cheaper if they are casted. I saw a beautiful purse made of silver it was about 35 dollars.

I personally would stay away from Gem dealers unless you know what you are doing. Too many scams.
