Some time ago - about 3 months - I posted a message asking for information on IH Indonesia. I said that I had already read (on this site) that IH made thier teachers work long hours (6 days a week 9-5) and that they had them working illegally.

Anyway I took the job. The police were at the school within a week of me starting and had to be paid off. I spent my time hiding on the roof if there was any sign of the police - they returned twice again.
Needless to say that I quite the job. This is a warning to others who may be thinking off taking the same job - in Jakarta.
That's all folks !

International House is one of the largest TEFL organizations in the world.
The owner of Malaysia IH (they own IH Indonesia) is one of the richest men in SE Asia.
Many would like to see him jailed but he is a close friend of the Malaysian Prime Minister so he is not likely to be imprisoned.(Crook that he is.)
Sorry but the best that can happen is that no other teachers fall into this trap - by working for IH in Jakarta.

Are they definately an official IH school? I've been job hunting recently and there is no mention on the IH website of a school in Indonesia. I haven't found any advertising either for an IH school in Indonesia...

International House used to be one of the best language providers until it decided to franchise 'Dunkin' Donut' style.

Check the spelling, possibly it isn't a genuine IH franchise, but maybe an 'International Hoes' Chinglish creation to fool the customers.

I sympathise with the OP, but I am also pleased to read this as I dearly hope it cost the school 100x more than they planned to save by being lying, deceitful scum-sucking dogs.

Yes it is definitely an IH school owned by IH Malaysia.

I can send you a copy off the contract and, also, I was working for IH in Kuala Lumpur before they sent me to Jakarta. At present they have no native english teachers in Jakarta - which might explain the confusion. (I was working illegally in Kuala Lumpur also.)

In the school there is a map of the world with all the IH schools on it - just like in KL. KL do not seem interested in expanding their school in Jakarta - they use it to sent as many of the students as possible to the school in KL.
Hope this is clear.

You are right I should be blacklisted for telling the truth. I will still get plenty of job offers because I am such a good teacher.
If you think that employing teachers illegally is something to keep quiet about then that is your problem. As for me I will continue to expose corruption whenever I see it.

What was actually wrong with the school? You mention that the police came and had to be paid off; what for?
It still looks really sus. All IH schools are listed on their website and there is no mention of one in Jakarta. Have you contacted anyone centrally at IH to find out? Also, if you heard bad things about IH, why did you take the job in the first place? There seems to be lots of work around for teachers in Jakarta (and I'm not talking about all of thoses EF posts.)

If you had read my previous message you would have seen that there is definitely a IH school in Jakarta. I took the job because no-one replied to my post requesting information about IH Jakarta. What was wrong with the school is that they employed me illegally - both in Indonesia and Malaya.
Neither myself nor other teachers will be intimidated by any threat of being blacklisted. Do your worst - I do not care.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the obvious - i.e. why the police came. It was because they suspected that someone was working at the school illegally(you see! ) and they were right. The manager of the school said that they(the police that is) were probably tipped off by the security guard working at the school. He had to pay them off to stop them arresting him(they took him to the police station) and he told them that I was just a visitor and not actually working at the school. Thats why they came back - you see!
If you still think that I dreamt the whole thing up, and am talking about a school that does not exist, then why do you not phone or e-mail IH Malaysia and ask them about their school in Jakarta ? (Which they have obviously not included on their list. (Their mistake not mine.))
I will be glad to answer any more of your well thought out and highly intelligent questions.

Indonesia's law and order situation must have improved dramatically since my last visit if they have the resources to send police to a school for having a teacher without documentation.

Easy tiger!! I wasn't having a go. However, your original post doesn't say why the police were there or what your gripe was. You only state that you had heard rumors about poor hours and working illegaly before you took the job and when you were working there the police came and you hid on the roof.

I wasn't suggesting that you were lying about the existence of IH Jakarta, only suggesting that it might not have been a legit IH school, even if it was owned by IH Malaysia.
