Hi all,
I'd like to get some feedback from those of you who have worked in both Ankara and Izmir. Can anyone enlighten me on the pros and cons of working in both cities? That is, as regards institutions, pay, conditions, life-style, social life, people, transport etc.. Basically, I'd like to know which city you prefer to live and work in, and why? |

I had asked this question just last month and there are some responses if you check the older entries.
Basically I think that most people want to get away from Ankara because it has nothing going for it beyond work. In my younger years I used to describe it as a "sh*t hole" but I was giving it second thoughts because work conditions are slightly better than izmir (or so i'm told)
I chose izmir because of the location and climate. It's a relaxed city with a consistantly liberal voting population and although the mountains and sea are nice and although it is within easy reach of the best beaches in the country the city lacks a sophisticated culture. As far as work is concerned, if you can get a job at the Economy University then you will be better off than being in Istanbul because your rent here and everything else will be a tiny fraction of what it takes to go from point A to B in Istanbul. |

Thanks tvik,
I've just checked your previous posting. I know what Ankara is like because I've been living here for the past 6 years. I agree with all who say Ankara is just brown and boring but I was quite happy at work. Now, I feel that I need a change. I don't think I can stand another bitterly cold winter and being drenched in mud because of all the loose paving stones! I want a milder climate, a more interesting life and enough income to get by. Istanbul is just too much of a mad rush for me, so I thought Izmir might be a good option. Oh well, I suppose I won't really know unless I try it out for myself. |
