|
|
Hi All,
I am going to be staying in Mexico City for an extended period of time, probably 6 mos. I am looking for a very basic, low rent apartment. Nothing fancy needed since I will be doing a lot of travelling in the country. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks,
Angela |

Lots of options available to you...and cheaper if you look locally and not on the net.
You can pick something central, in Colonias Roma, Del Valle, Juarez, Cuauhtemoc, Napoles, Narvarte, Centro Historico, among others. 1 or 2 bedroom, modestly furnished will go anywhere from 1500 to 5000+ pesos. |

those are not the cheaper central areas. if you want to really save, look in san rafael, tabacalera, maybe santa maria la ribera although i haven't been there and can't really recommend it. i walked by a furnished studio just west of metro juarez, behind la ciudadela, for 1800 which included utilities but i never actually went in to see what it looked like. honestly, i would put security at the top of the list when looking for places here. |

I like San Rafa and Santa Ribera...but they take some getting used to. Good rent prices there and for several reasons, lots of ESL bookstores around.

Matt, I've always thought of that small corridor of town to be a tough area. Not a place for a single girl, making an assumption of the OP here. Ever wandered around between metros Juarez, Hidalgo, and Revolucion after dark? |

ok, it's actually probably closer to metro balderas, but you have a point. i haven't been in that specific area after dark but i have been in the area around metros hidalgo and revolucion. in fact i used to live above metro hidalgo and spent lots of evenings wandering around bad areas, like an idiot. almost the entire centro historico is a bad area too, though. however, this person was looking for cheap... it is possible but very difficult to find "cheap" accomodation anywhere that i would consider safe in mexico city. that has been my experience, at least.
if you are willing to share, 2000 would be the low end for a decent neighborhood, i think. if you are not willing to share, i would put it around 2500 or 3000 for something tolerable, unless you are well-connected or willing to spend a month searching. |

Hi Angela,
You said "low-rent" but that is a fairly subjective question. When are you arriving in Mexico City? In July, I'm moving out of a good little one-brm, two-bthrm apartment on the edge of Polanco, within walking distance to shops and Chapultepec It is a secure, safe neighbourhood (though this is also subjective!) and fine for a woman living on her own. The rent is $5800 pesos per month. I paid one-month rent in advance to the landlady. PM me if you are interested... |

One of my favorite things about Mexico...an abundance of bathrooms in homes. Except, of course, when you really need one and are out in the street. |

COMPLETELY off topic but that reminds me that yesterday during a family dinner of all times, the cousins were discussing how the ATM booths are a less risky place to urinate than the street. I barely managed to finish my chiles en nogada after that. |

Do you actually eat chiles en nogada and enjoy it? About the only Mexican food I haven't taken a liking to. |

I thought I was the only one who didnt like chiles en nogada! But then I was never one for mixing sweet and savory nor one for cold meat dishes (other than sandwiches of course). |

WHAT!!!!
That's myall time favorite Mexican dish!
I love any kind of chiles rellenos, but the two best are the sweet and savory ones, the ones in the red sauce with apples, raisens, platano macho and guayabas, and especially Chiles en Nogada. Around here you can only get them in September, and I make a point of having one or two each year. mmmmmmmmmm September is just around the corner! |

It was one of the first things I ate when I arrived here last summer. I asked the waiter to suggest something. I nearly got on the next plane home. |
