Saludos
Ive posted already in the Argentina forum and am looking to teach overseas. Right now Im torn between Monterrey, Mexico and Buenos Aires, Argentina. I originally had planned to make my move to Monterrey as Im actually really familiar with the city (been there on vacations several times and a friend is marrying a regia). Im not asking anyone to help me make my choice, because my whole decision is based basically on one question. Whether or not it would be feasible for me to move to mty and build up enough private students within a month to be able to survive. I know several people that are going to Tec but they arent really helping me much in assesing the situation. If I go to Mexico Im debating whether or not to even get a tefl certificate (If I do probably teflonline or something cheap). I know that mexico is kind of tough on "illegals" and I probably am going to have to work illegaly as well. Does anyone have any tips for gaining students at all? Areas to canvass etc..? Ill be driving to Monterrey around the 24th of Nov. so is there anything I could do while Im there to help me if I decide to move there in January? |

Private students are kind of a hassle anywhere you go, though they do tend to pay better and Mty is a good place for high paying private students. I'd reccomend the area around the Tec de Monterrey University or the UDEM slso the suburb of San Pedro Garza Garcia and the Cumbres sector of Monterrey. Another option is to hook up with an organization that does business english, there are several around here and you can usually pick up some classes if you know your way around the city a little bit and in the meanwhile you could be checking into areas to advertise or make connections. in order to branch off on your own, provided that you don't go stealing students from the school you're working with naturally.
If you're interested in TEFL you can check out
http://www.engcanada.com/TEFL_TESOL.htm
it's the Global TESOL College course offered on site in Monterrey.
