Hi. I am new to posting, but I have been lurking around on the forums for a while. I am writing because I am interested in teaching as an ESL instructor in colleges, universities or any serious English language school in Latin America. Please forgive the long message.
I have my Masters in Adult ESL from a university in the US, and I have been teaching ESL in the US for several years- working with refugees and families, and in the work place and community college.
As it turns out, August would be a good time for me to finally leave the US and teach. However, I have several concerns.
I have a husband who is willing to travel with me. However, he is working on a Phd. and would need access to reliable personal Internet connection.
As he is still a student, I am the main provider. I would need a job where I could still be the provider, and I am hesitant to leave what I have here in the states in search of something without a job.
I am not interested in working at a place that wont help me progress in my growth as a teacher.
We are not big spenders and would like just to be comfortable.
I would like to live in Latin American because it would not be as difficult for my husband to leave and visit his professors, and I can hold my own in Spanish.
I am looking for advice about how I can go about finding reliable jobs in Latin America. Is my plan even feasible? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated! |

Chile is the only place you could really make that happen. Unfortunately, Santiago, the capital, isnt the most south american of south american cities if you follow my drift, but it does provide you with all of the things you mentioned. If you teach 25 hours a week and have a private or two, life will be nice. I didn't work there as I chose Bolivia instead but a friend of mine made 1700 usd a month in Santiago and he really liked the school. PM me if you need any more information. Take care. |

You can find all those things in the bigger cities here in Mexico (if you're classing Mexico as part of Latin America). Most universities will pay 100+ pesos an hour which is more than enough for two people to live on as long as you're not planning to live the US lifestyle abroad. |
