Do any of you have any advice regarding how to deal with (to be frank) utter little sh*ts?
I'm just wondering how to combat the talk-backers, the ones who imitate your voice and the ones who just play up and couldn't give a toss about learning?
Cheers. |

can you use a reward system? give out stickers to the listeners, the ones who sit down first, do their homework etc?
i don't know how it would work in a japanese classroom, but if you could plan a big game as a reward when they're being good, or have gotten 5 stickers each or something.
i'm on my way to japan later this year and i work in a day care now, and i used to get really annoyed when kids imitated me and the more angrier i got, the more they did it. now if they imitate me, i imitate them back. most of them know i'm kidding around though and carry on being a little snarky, but when they want something, i tell them, 'ask me politely then we can do x.'
when they see that i can make faces back (whether i'm kidding or not, heh) and they're not getting my annoyed response they want, i notice their snarky attitude appears less frequently during the day. |

This could be a valuable thread -- but a little bit more detail is needed. Unfortunately, the term "little sh*ts" could ultimately be applicable to any grade, from elementary school grade 1, all the way up to high school grade 12, and anything in between.
Also, it would help to know: the size of the class, how often you see them, whether there is a Japanese teacher present with you or not, and lastly, whether this is in an actual public (or private) school, or are we talking eikaiwa here?
I've had to deal with demonspawn of MANY varieties to-date, and these are all factors to consider in your response to them. |

Getting them to help out in class works sometimes.
Like making them the special board cleaner or something of the like.
But if it gets REALLY ridiculous, call native support. |

Ignore them.
I have two Franken kids. One is a kinda leader/bully. The other is a outcast mutant half-kid (who in her own way is actually sometimes cool). One time I was holding these cards and franken kid comes up and grabs the cards, thrwos them on the floor and walks back to her seat. This doesn't even phase me anymore. I just say to my self, "Wild Animals, F-ing Wild Animals."
Ideally, you want to provide walls for these kids. Because of the nature of the Aikiwa buisness and a few other reasons there isn't a lot you can do. Offering candy and stickers is nice but I don't think it will work. Maybe you can beg them too. At some point, you have to realzie there are some things you can do and somethings you can't. When the Franken kids get out of hand, I just call my boss. Othertimes I just go to the other side of the room. If they behave, I'll teach them, but I don't waste my time. it has made life less stressful. |
