I've recently returned from five weeks in Granada, Nicaragua, at the ABC School. I went to help organize and evaluate the school for the North American partner, who lacks education/EFL experience (his opinion--I found him to be well versed and articulate in this and many other areas).
I had a wonderful experience there, as promised in their ad. The school has been in transition since the beginning of the year, but by the time I arrived at the end of April, I felt the foundations were well in place. The teachers, both local and recruited from English-speaking countries, are strong and are improving all the time. Management is avid about supporting the teachers in every way possible.
Is Nicaragua an ideal vacation spot? Not really. Granada is a beautiful, user-friendly little city in a very poor country, one with little nightlife for the party set but lots of wonderful people and beautiful excursions nearby, very much like Costa Rica but without the overabundance of tourists and wealthy gringos. It's hot--I was there at the worst time of year--but I actually learned to like living without airconditioning and showering three times daily for the pleasure of getting wet.
If you want to make a contribution to a developing part of the world and experience a lovely culture different from your own, consider this opportunity.
If you are interested in this area and have any questions about Granada or the ABC School, I'll be happy to correspond with you. I am staying in the US for the time being but am committed to supporting the school and its students in any way I can.
Thank you for your interest.[/color] |
