Many schools advertise that they will pay for all required permits etc.

Many schools advertise that they will reimburse your permit fees.

Some schools make no mention.

It seems to be a school-by-school decision.

The government regs are silent on who pays so it is a negotiating point.

I have never paid for mine.

Of course, it is UNCOMMON.
It is true, however, that many end up working illegally, on a business visa, which they have to buy outside of the mainland. Some don't get refunded. Sometimes, the "school" applies for a business visa and pays for it - but you are an II, and the school knows it, only the PSB may not know.

In any case, the school must pay, they even pay for the paperwork that some of their Chinese employees have to go through.

I assumed we are talking about the Z visa. When changing jobs after being here a while what do you call it? I've never done that.

However, I certainly paid for my Z.

I've never, ever paid for a Z visa and accompanying documents. See no reason you should have to either...they're not cheap!

My school pays my residents permit and experts certificate renewals. If I want a visa to go abroad and re-enter, then that's a personal expense.
As long as the school's upfront about it's policy, and doesn't spring it on you. Some places pay a higher salary, but expect you to meet other expenses, which is fair.

so what kind of visa do you buy for your stay in China, and where do you buy it? Surely, your school must apply for a work visa, which you can't do on your own.
Some schools manage to muddle through by obtaining those other documents but not a regular work visa. THis means that the employee is in an illegal situation.
There are single-entry work visas, which are cheaper than multiple entry visas. If a school asks you to pay for the difference, I would possibly pay that difference, but i would be opposed to paying for my minimum requirement visa costs.

I have notice3d that some schools do make expats pay for part of their visa, i.e. a kindergarten teacher colleague of mine who has a Chinese wife; he makes 8000 rMB, she only 1500 (and she puts in three times as many hours per week working); she does not need any legal documents, and he has to pay 30 percent of his visa cost.
WHich still leaves 70 percent to the school.

Never paid for a visa (and I have a Z, multiple entry). They will
even convert my Z to a tourist at the end of my stay.

(But, such are the horrors of working for one of those
chain schools, they seem to work all that out for me!)
