Hello.I've been viewing suggestions and comments here for several months and have found them to be quite informative.I'll be coming to Latin America in June. My plan is study Latin American literature at the graduate level and perfect my Spanish. Ideally, I'd like to support myself by teaching English. I realize I won't be able to save but i would like to make enough to support a modest lifestyle.I'm an experienced teacher, having taught Business English for a few months in Mexico City and I also taught Spanish when I was in Grad school in the U.S.
I've narrowed my choices to either Mexico City or Buenos Aires. My question is, in which city would I have the best chance of supporting myself? I realize that much of it depends on me and on the energy and effort I put into it. I guess what I'm trying to find out is which city has the best objective conditions for an English teacher taking into account wages, cost of living, and variety of opportunities. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'd have to say Mexico City, simply for being more stable than BA (feel free to disagree there Matttheboy) and size. Business EFL classes might be more plentiful and felxible on scheduling here if you plan to study...at UNAM I would assume?
If you can do 10 to 15 hours a week teaching here, early mornings or late afternoons, you can cover most expenses and have time for study. |

Guy- thanks for replying to my post. Most likely I'll choose Mexico City. Judging from what I've read and heard the situation for English teachers in Buenos Aires seems a bit bleak what with the low wages and the increasing cost of living. It seems that it would be easier to sustain a halfway decent standard of living in Mexico City. Prescott |
