Ive been in Buenos Aires a few months. This is my first extended stay and attempt to work outside the U.S. I like the city, but it seems that the rent charged to foreigners is very high considering the wages you can make here (20 pesos per hour, lets say) My question is, is there less of a disparity in other South American countries between (foreigner) rent and wages? Is it common in S.A. to charge foreigners much more or is Argentina unique that way?
I'll probably be moving on in a couple of months, but staying in south america. any suggestions of places where it is easier to pay rent on a teachers wage?
thanks! |

I lived for one year in Bogot, Colombia. I was teaching English there too. I found I could find accomodation the same as I would if I had been Colombian. I just looked at the classifed section of the paper 'rooms to rent'and found something no problem. They didn't even ask for any references or deposit. I would say I was paying tops US$150 for a room in a shared flat with fridge and washing machine or $100 without fridge and washing machine. It's not unusual to live somewhere without a fridge, I did it sucessfully for 3 months. It so cheap to eat out there you don't really need to cook. The big pain in the arse was hand washing. Laundrettes are expensive or you can do what everyone does and just pay someone to do it. I would definately say when I was there the cost of living, ie what you spent compared to what you earned was cheaper than here, tho there are many downsides to living there too. Send me a message if you want more details.
