Looks like I'll be going to Viet Nam soon, and I have a couple quick questions for anyone who might know:
> Can I continue to study/practice my Mandarin Chinese in Viet Nam?
> Is there any sort of market for native-speaker Mandarin Chinese teachers there?
In Indonesia, there was ALMOST as big a market for learning Chinese as there was for English. It was a lot less formal, so far as I could tell; a ton of Chinese teachers just worked giving private lessons in people's homes. I ask because I would like my wife to join me, and that is something she can do (she's native Chinese, from the PRC).
Again, in Indonesia (well...at least Jakarta), someone could have made some pretty good money, I would think, offering Chinese with their English school, or even making just a Chinese First type of thing. I don't want to go THAT far, but I was wondering (hoping!) if the market for Chinese instruction there was similar.
I intend to learn at the very least get-by Vietnamese, of course, but Chinese is actually important to me, and no matter where I go, that has to be my priority, for familial reasons.
By the way, I'll be in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Not as close to China as Hanoi, I know, but it IS, I believe, a bigger city.
Thanks for whatever you can tell me. |

i KNOW chinese is taught by SOME teacher in SCHOOL. BUT i'm not sure if it's mandarin or catonese, in VN there's LOTS of chineses fr Tawain, singapore, hong kong, & mainland china due to lots of foreign investment by those countries. So i would think that there will be position for a chinese teacher.
One friend told me that a the singapore school, they teach kids all the langauges korean, japanese, chinese(madarin i assume), and english. my cousin has his 2 kids in chinese class, because his wife is chinese/vietnamese. there's lots of chinese/vietnamese still living in vn, but they usually speak catonese.
your wife, if she's aggressive in her job search/networking, may land a job w/ chinese company in vn instead of just a teaching job. |

Thanks for the suggestion!
Maybe that's what she'll do - look for jobs in Chinese companies. |
