My wife and I are retired teachers in our early 60s who are fit and healthy and enjoy non touristy travel and were wondering if there might be opportunities for folks our age to get ESL jobs overseas. Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks |

No problem, search for jobs in China. I'd say you might have a problem finding work at language schools in Korea, but even then it's still possible. |

China loves people with your skills. What type of students are you interested in, university, middle school or children? |

Korea welcomes lots of older folks - but you will both need a degree. |

We both have degrees as well as an ESL course and would probably be interested in teaching middle school and up.
Thanks |

I've also met a couple here in Japan working with Westgate on a 3-month contract. They said they've been working all over the world on short-term assignments since they retired. Both were former school teachers. |

Middle schools in China pay better than University and there are so many that need you. |

Malsol,
When you compare middle school to university jobs - what about paid vacation time? And the ability to make the connections for side jobs and other income?
And - where are you in China - my understanding is that the market varies significantly from urban to rural? |

IN CHINA
Generally speaking Middle Schools pay better than universities, comparatively, within any given community. |

I'm 58 and have taught in China for three years. Our school has had teaching couples and individual teachers as old as 77. Health is a more important factor than age. If you have pensions in your home country you may be interested in more services than money from your employer. If that is the case and you are interested in China, PM me for details of my school. I'm not a recruiter but feel considerably loyalty to the college where I teach. I'm leaving this summer because I have become TOO comfortable and want to try other countries while I still can. |

Macao is another place that you can find ESL jobs. There are many new ESL teaching opportunities in Macao ever since 2004. They pay better than China schools and the place is easy to navigate since it's small. Besides, you can easily walk across the boarder to China (Zhuhai) or take the jetfoil to HK. |

And Chinese middle-schools can be traumatising for you! Not all kids are meek and polite, and no class is of decent size; what's more the idea that you should do what Chinese teachers fail to do is a bit immature. |

They're in their 60s, Roger...a bit old to be regarded as "immature", don't you think? Even by your "standards".
I'm pushing 65, sunshine, and I could teach you under the table, anyday!!
"under the table" is a colloquialism, BTW. |
