|
|
I'm currently in Tokyo on an internship through Tokyo Co-Op. I'm going to Hong Kong in fall semester for a teaching internship and then finishing up my degree back in America while interning with some social activism groups. I'm interested in moving to Japan after graduation for some work and was wondering if it would be possible to start interviewing or getting my name out before graduating. I plan to graduate in June of 2007 with a degree in Linguistics, Japanese and TESL. I am primarily interested in doing social work and second language acquisition research, but I would like to postpone the research for some more life applicable experiences.
I'm currently interning around Waseda University and have been trying to establish some connections and get some networking going for possible future positions. I am mainly interested in social work and non-profit organizations, but I really would like to have a job where I can have enough free time to work a part-time job using only Japanese (right now I am at 2kyuu level of proficiency).
If anyone has any advice or suggestions please let me know! I have a few papers I brought with me that I have done for linguistics and comparative-literature classes and I have a somewhat meager resume written up outlining the last three years of my volunteer and intern work abroad and in America. If anyone can suggest some tips for job hunting, especially with non-profits or those kinds of organizations, please let me know!
Thanks for your time and help. |

You're not going to get hired until you can show that you are eligible for a work visa, which means that you either HAVE the degree or that your school guarantees that you WILL get the degree. You don't have the former, so you have to wait until you almost graduate to be in the latter situation.
Of course, if you want to scout around, feel free, but you won't be able to take any jobs until you graduate. |

You seem like the perfect candidate for it. Best thing you can do for that if to make solid connections with professors in your field ASAP.
Or else apply for Fullbright.
Or else try and make connections you can use later to get an internship.
But for real employment, you really cant do much until you have that degree in hand. |
