hey,
Anyone know.. is it possible to draw on your bank account, make a check out, to send to someone overseas? And can they take it to their bank and cash it?

No. Checks, although not completely unheard of at Japanese banks, are seldom used. Also, even if you were able to send one, your recipent would probably have to wait about a month for the check to clear...
Check the threads on this forum about sending money back home and what your options are... Lloyds or the Post Office are the most common methods. |

Which brings me to the next thing!
I also have a check for me, from someone. waiting , for a long time, doing nothing in my room.
Can I take a check (from overseas, to: me) and cash it at a bank in Japan? |

Probably, but you will face two problems. One, unless the check is for a large sum of money, the cost of cashing it will likely be more than the check itself (no joke -- it may cost you anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 yen to cash)... Second, it may also take a month or so. Whenever a check has to clear internationally, it requires the two banks in question to correspond with each other, usually by registered mail, which takes time... A Canadian bank teller explained the process to me once -- it sounded really ugly. |
