One thing to consider also is whether you can leave on a one-way.
In 2004 my wife and I had our one way tickets refused with just a little over an hour before boarding. From Canada.
Some strange law our Travel agent omitted to bring up. Tense moment to say the least.
Finally we were advised to purchase a ticket bound for Bangkok from China, where we were travelling to. Once in China, simply get a refund we were told. This is what we did and nearly five months later we eventually got the refund.

Sorry. Intended for the (One-way or return???) thread.
