I'm still very new to the Japanese writing system. As it is I'm trying to learn Hiragana first as I've been told it's the simplest of the three.

I was recently asked if I knew how to write my name in Katakana, which I don't, so I started looking up the katakana symbols. Well, I'm still none the wiser.

How on earth would I write my name, 'Phil' in Katakana? Can anyone help, cos I feel like I'm missing a couple of pieces of the puzzle here?
Thanks.

Phil

Hi Smeg!

I'm writing on a mac so I don't think the katakana will come out but it should be written FU, little i, RU ... FUiRU

I hope that makes sense... But I'm sure a windows person will write it for you anyway.

I just have to butt in and say that in my opinion, katakana is FAR easier than hirigana.

You can learn either from scratch in abut 6 hrs spread over a weekend. Do a search for the book with the system (Learning the kana or somesuch, author's name is Heiszig, if I remember correctly.)

For learning the Hiragana and Katakana there is a system developed by James W. Heisig. I used it and learnt the Hiragana in under 3 hours. Learning the Katakana took about the same length of time.

I'd second this. I'm amazed that there are people who spend weeks or months learning these scripts when you can do it in 2 days using the method described in these books. The kanji version is also highly recommended. They can be a bit difficult to come by though. I got mine here: http://www.nanzan-u.ac.jp/SHUBUNKEN/contact/ordering_books_special.htm
