I think that living in Turkey encourages you to let yourself go and put on weight.

Do not eat bread!

I'm with mongrelcat, though not as much food poisoning. I weigh about the same as I did in high school! It's freakish.

But I don't eat bread, really. Except to mop stuff off my plate.

I think I am exactly the same as I was four years ago when I first arrived. I never had any tummy trouble here though- maybe from all of those years of training trying to eat street food in west africa and eastern europe... turkish food was a breath of non contaminated air by comparison. Pity about that though- wouldnt mind involuntary weight loss!

I agree with Thrifty on the bread!

Late night sandwiches after the pub - Or a kebab on the way home!

I eat the street rice too - which is pure poison!!! So I must have a cast Iron Stomach!! Wink

I just got back from holiday too- and in Cairo, they serve hard, dry squares of pita bread (not pide- the kind you stuff with felafel) with everything, and your average unfancy restaurant serves about three things- moussaka (nice), kochary (leftover noodles, rice, lentils, etc shoved together and covered in tomato sauce) or felafel/shwarma. Agh! I missed the, er, wide and diverse variety of yummy foods available here... never thought I'd praise Turkey for its diverse cuisine, low crowd density, and unpervy street men... but compared to Cairo, Istanbul is perfect. Wow.

Did you travel there by bus?

Did you stay in a hostel?

Did you eat in cheap places because you were on a tight budget?

Of course. A golden rule of travelling is to find the nearest McDonalds. The golden arches are a good landmark, you can get a yummy Big Mac and most importantly they have clean toilets... with toilet paper. This is important when in a foreign country with foreign bugs and stuff.
