Hey everyone.... I've read some of the recent "flight ticket threads" on Dave's, and have decided to go to.... absolutely nowhere. Looks like you get assraped no matter WHAT you do or WHICH company you go with or even WHERE you go-- it sickens me to the point of just wanting to stay in Japan. The best and cheapest solution is to just stay home! (Unfortunately)...

As such, if I stay in Japan, that doesn't mean I don't want to take a holiday. I really wanted to go someplace like Saipan or Thailand to take an inexpensive diving course and get my open water certification.

Does anyone know of any companies operating out of Japan which offer PADI courses in English? (Please, don't recommend anything in Okinawa -- the airfare costs more than going to Thailand right now -- so I'm thinking somewhere on Honshu)...

Much appreciated!

BTW, I have a friend who apparently goes out to Izu (Shizuoka Pref.) to go diving... So I wonder if there is something in that general area. Also, he did his certification in Japan, but all in Japanese... Which is a bit more than I care to undertake.

Oh yeah, and on second thought, if you DO know of something in Okinawa, tell me anyway -- so maybe if I can't put something together this summer holiday, I can save up the cash and try to do it at a later date.

Your best bet is to go to Thailand and take the diving course there. It will be much cheaper to do so and the instruction is excellent. Many people do it that way. Good luck.

Thanks, canuck...Believe me, that was exactly my plan! A friend of mine did exactly did this Spring. The problem is that flights to Thailand are ludicrous right now -- hence my reason for exploring local options... I realize it would be more expensive to learn in Japan, but I think that the lack of having to pay for an expensive flight ticket would make up the difference..... Question Idea

go to malaysia. you can get relatively cheap flights and get certified, in english for about $300 - $500 US, depending on where you go and what kind of certification you want. the courses usually take about 4-6 days. im sure that in japan, there are courses offered, but they may be in a swimming pool or lake or something...and finding an english one might be difficult.

another option...go to korea. check out this site: http://www.scubainkorea.com/

flights/boats to korea are very cheap, the courses are in english, and the cost of hanging out in korea is a bit lower than it is in japan.

a quick google search found this in japan: http://www.marscuba.com/
