Posted: Sat Jul 08, 2006 6:55 pm Post subject: Immigration and My Degree - big Questions |
|
|
Okay gang, here are my questions.
Was supposed to go to Japan in April on a student VISA. Was in a car accident and had to reject the offer. At that point, my VISA had alread been approved by immigration (though, I didn't get my passport stamped at my local office here in the States). Now, they still have my Original Diploma.
As it turns out, I may be able to go over as a working man, rather than a student. I have been waiting for my diploma to be mailed back, but with no luck. Enter the questions:
1) If I get offered a job and they wish to sponsor my VISA, would I have to send the degree again? Or can I say that immigration already has it and then explain the story? I've contact the school I graduated from and they can replace it, but that could take 6-10 weeks.
2) How will all of this influence my chances of getting approved for a work VISA? Will it be held over my head, will I encounter problems?
Any advice, input, etc, is EXTREMELY WELCOME. Thank you in advance. |

You might have to send the degree again. Nobody can really tell. Immigration moves in mysterious ways, and you might even have to apply to a different office than before. Depends on where you want the job.
I'd say do your best to get the original back, but see how much it costs to get a duplicate from your university. Should be relatively cheap, but as you have already found, you never know exactly how long it will take, so act now.

? I doubt that turning down the first visa will cause any problems whatsoever.
Oh, and the spelling is all lower case letters -- visa -- not VISA. All capital letters is for the credit card. |

lol. I hadn't notice that I was writing that in all caps. Thanks for the heads up. Also, thanks for the information. The duplicate is actually free of charge from my university, which I think is amazing! Yeah, it is that whole length of time thing.
Follow up question:
What should I tell the employer if they are interested and make me an offer? Advice on that is most definitely appreciated, as well. Thanks!! |

Amazing how often on travel sites as well as this one you see people write visa as VISA when they mean the travel permit, not the credit card. It really makes you think about how advertising must hang around in our unconscious- somewhere at the bcak of most people's minds is that logo... |

MrCAPITUL ( who must love CAPITAL letters),
Just tell your employer the truth. You have nothing evil to hide. |
