|

With summer holidays approaching , I'm sure I'm not the only one who will be needing an international driver's licence soon. It would be really nice to know how one goes about this...? Thanks in advance, and have an absolutely wicked (but safe!) summer. |

HI Kuberkat,
I appreciated your info on my earlier post on driving.
Could I be a bit backwards here and add a question to your post that might also be answered?
Can one get an Int Dr Lic. with nothing more than an Omani license,
OR is it only available to those holding a licence from their home country.

Hi Verity
Hope I haven't been too biased about driving conditions after so much time on the road- I many be whistling a different tune after driving abroad in summer. IF it is, indeed, possible to get an international licence with only the Omani one.
So, can it be done? And how?

Just for you Kuber... I dug out some of my old Oman stuff and found the 1998 American Women's Group Guide. In it I found this:
Oman Automobile Association
Seeb 510-239
It says that they issue international driving licenses. What we don't know is if it is only to Omanis. They may not still be in Seeb, but check out the Muscat phonebook.

Good news all round. VeiledSentiments spared me from a wild goose chase with the suggestion of the Oman Automobile Association. (Do I sign over my estate now or later ?) Details are included below.
The International Driver's Permit is valid for all countries having agreed to the 1949 convention, which seems to include most of the civilized world and beyond. A list is included on the document for your reference. The very good news (listen up, Verity) is that the document is issued on your Oman driver's licence and is valid for one year.
To apply for the permit, you will need two passport photographs, your Oman driver's licence and RO 10.250 (ten rials, 250 baizas.) Processing takes approximately ten minutes.
Oman Automobile Association
Tel: (24) 510 630
Office hours: 8 am to 2 pm weekdays.
The offices are located at the OAA's car racing track in Seeb.
To get there from the Seeb Airport Roundabout:
1. Turn in the opposite direction from the airport (towards the Oman Exihibition Centre and Golden Tulip Hotel)
2. Continue to the next, small roundabout and make a full turn (so you are effectively going back to the airport)
3. Turn right at Omanair and continue on the same road, past the Exhibition Center, Golden Tulip and Police Station, for 3 km.
4. The racing track is on your right, marked with red, green and checkered flags. The route to the office is clearly signposted from here.
Happy trails! |

The track is a blast - for go-karts - they are fairly peppy and the course is fun. They have events out there as well like an annual 24 hour LeMans style - a true endurance event to drive for hours in a little kart racer! Right next to the softball diamond with 'clubhouse' -a little known venue for cold beers during Ramadan ! It's not quite in Seeb as it is on the Muscat side of the airport - more like the edge of Ghala / Al Hail.
