Sending cash to a friend within Japan. Never done a genkin kakitome, but I'm assuming its a reliable, safe way to send cash. If my assumption is wrong, or if you know a better way, please post your accordingly.

Thanks in advance.

If you know his or her bank account number you can send a cash payment through an ATM machine at a branch of the same bank. I dont think you need to have an account yourself. You can always get the bank attendant to walk you through the procedure.

Genkin kakitome is a registered letter but it's expensive, at about 550 yen per letter. If you send it 'sokutatsu' it wll arrive the next working day.

Yeah. It's called furikomi

You need the following:

Your friend's:

1) bank name
2) bank branch
3) account number
4) account type (chequing or savings or whatever)
5) friend's name AS IT APPEARS on the official bank records

As for you, you can do it from your own bank account, or even from a bank ATM that's not your own (I believe)... It's fairly simple but some Japanese knowledge is necessary, unless you have English service available to you.

I used to do it all the time before (from an ATM) but now, since I've gotten my Shinsei Bank account, I do it online using Internet banking and all in English to boot.

Good luck!

go to a bank (preferably yours) with all the info jimdunlop2 listed above. go up to the nearest staff member, hold your list out in front of you at a 90 degree angle and wait. the staff member will either be terrified and call the police, or she will help you at the ATM.

things to remember:
guns are not allowed in banks
if you go in with a full face motocycle helmet, you might have trouble
pants are required in banks
beating on atms will not produce the desired results
harming staff members is generally frowned upon
unless you are an old woman, you will be required to queue

good luck
