Hey all, just wondering if anyone knows if there is a Bank of Tokyo in Sendai city? I want to set up an account from Canada before I leave, but there is no point if there is no branch in my city.
Thanks! |

I'm not an expert, but I think it would be very difficult to set up an account from abroad.
If you can speak some Japanese, it might be a little easier. Do you already know your address in Sendai? I think you'll need your Alien Registration Card to get a bank account.
Also, why Bank of Tokyo? Do they offer services you're interested in, or has someone recommended them?
JimDunlop2 made some comments about this bank - http://www.shinseibank.com/english/ - a few weeks ago. I've taken a look, and am going there this afternoon to open an account. Cheers for the info Jim. |

I thought Bank of Tokyo because there is a branch in Vancouver and Sendai. So if I open the account from home, I just assume you could access it once in Japan. This may not be the case, and then there truly is no advantage to going through them
The shinseibank did look very good. I like the internet banking aspect. That is all I do here at home. |

No worries -- glad to recommend something I use myself. As for Bank of Tokyo, I don't know much about them -- other than the fact that I went in there to exchange my dollars to yen when I was in Vancouver... Wasn't too impressed by them though.
I don't understand why you'd want to go through the hassle of opening an account from abroad. Makes no sense. Doing it after you arrive is perfectly adequate. I seriously doubt you could use Bank of Tokyo's services in Japan if you opened an account in Canada. I may be wrong in this, but Canadian and Japanese banks are two completely different beasts... And I don't think you could send or receive furikomi funds from a bank based in Vancouver (unless, somehow through some strange exceptions they were considered in the same way as a local Japanese branch)... |

Why don't you contact the Vancouver branch and ask them? |

Bank of Tokyo has merged with others several times in the last decade to become Tokyo-Mitsubishi-UFJ (MUFG) now anyway- as far as I know there isn't a separate Bank of Tokyo here anymore. |

I thought by setting it up here it might save me the hassle when I got over there. Sounds like I will just wait. Plus the Shinseibank looks pretty good. |

When I lived in Vancouver the Bank of Tokyo was only available for business. You couldn't open a personal account. I don't know if this is still the case. |
